water block 1

The first natural dyes I chose to experiment with came easily from my kitchen. Tea and turmeric are renowned for their staining power, and as someone who enjoys both tea and turmeric, they were in easy reach.

The first tea dye produced a ashy-grey tone, that I didn’t love, but used as the top layer for my first ‘water block’. The bottom layer of this block was not dyed naturally, instead it is a color called ‘petrol’ that I am trying to use up. I wanted to test a wave pattern, so these two rejects actually came together to produce something interesting. I’ll need a blue for this project, so I’m leaning towards indigo. I know that indigo is a much more complicated process to work with, so I am testing water stencil patterns with all my experimental dyes before jumping into the indigo vat.
